What Is a Handler Job Description?

The deliverable from Discovery — what it contains, why it's valuable on its own, and how it feeds into First Hire.

A Handler job description is the core deliverable of Discovery. It’s written by Handle’s team, specific to your business, and yours to keep whether or not you go on to First Hire.

What it contains

Each Handler job description covers:

  • The work being handed off — the specific tasks and decisions a Handler would own, not a vague category like “admin.”
  • The systems it touches — the tools, integrations and data the Handler needs access to.
  • The boundaries — what the Handler decides on its own, and what it escalates to a human.
  • Success criteria — how you’d know the Handler is doing the job well.

Why it’s valuable on its own

Writing this down is most of the hard work of getting value from AI in your operations — deciding what to hand off, and being specific enough about it that someone (or something) else could actually pick it up. Teams that skip this step tend to bolt AI onto existing workflows without changing anything, and see correspondingly little value.

A Handler job description forces that decision, whether you train a Handler on it through Handle or do it yourself.

How it feeds into First Hire

During First Hire, the job descriptions written in Discovery (or written fresh in Week 1, if you skipped Discovery) are what Handle’s team trains your Handlers against. See What to Expect from First Hire for how that training and rollout works.
